As the thread title suggests, which video host is best for HD video? Well first of all how about a direct comparison – the same video on all three sites:

Viddyou.com (paid)

Vimeo.com (paid)

Youtube.com (free)

It’s very very close, Viddyou seems to display the video with the most saturation, then Vimeo and then Youtube. Particularly with the red flowers Viddyou seems a bit too much. I would say Vimeo is just slightly sharper than the other two. Apart from that i can see very little difference.

I have to say i am surprised. I’m paying Vimeo for their Plus package[1] and compared to youtube, i’m wondering if it’s worth it? People over there say “ah yes but what you get over here is a better community“. True enough Youtube is littered with arseholes but i get more views and positive comments on Youtube than i do on Vimeo. So unless Vimeo come up with something come next subscription time then i don’t think i’ll be renewing with them. My main reason for uploading home movies is as an extra backup but also for embedding them on other sites. With Vimeo you only get a set amount of embedded High Definition plays per year. Even after you have paid them. If you need more plays then you pay them again! I don’t think so.

I’ve been looking for somewhere to upload both photos and videos. For pix i used Flickr and for videos i used Viddyou and had paid accounts with both. I’ve also tried Vimeo which i like and YouTube which is full of idiotic children leaving idiotic comments, so although HD videos look ok on YouTube, it’s still the a trailertrash video site. So anyway, i found SmugMug! It’s certainly not the cheapest of pix and video hosting solutions but i reckon it’s the best. Your photos are displayed very professionally and you can even sell them through SmugMug. But what really impressed me was their HD video! I’ve uploaded a couple of HD videos and they look amazing on there. Plus you get embed codes so you can embed either dvd quality video or web quality (see below).

Viddyou videos look better embedded i think, however, go to SmugMug and watch the video in full size High Def and you really notice a difference! –> Click Here

As i mentioned before i’ve been looking for somewhere online to put my HD videos. I originally liked Vimeo because it’s a nice clean layout, it has a great community for budding film-makers and novices wanting to learn how to use their camcorders, there’s also plenty of videos to be inspired by. However it’s a bit restrictive (limited uploads unless you pay and even when you do you still have limited embeds unless you pay yet again). So i settled on Viddyou because i can upload as much HD video as i like and i can embed as much HD video as i like for a lot less money than Vimeo. I also like the fact that i can use it as an online backup for my videos and you can even upload 1080 video!

But anyway, YouTube (which is 1280×720 resolution). I must say i was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the HD videos! In fact i’d even say it’s slightly better than Vimeo which many consider to be the best quality. The other thing YouTube has going for it is its massive audience! Here’s one of my videos in HD on YouTube – bear in mind to embed your HD YouTube you have to apply a hack which is explained here: How to embed HD YouTube Videos.

Click here to see the video in its full size

But it’s still YouTube and it’s still overrun with annoying mental midgets who leave comments such as “yoo suck dick fukin nooooob!” etc etc etc. HD or no HD, it’s still a fucking dump and the last place you wanna leave your precious memories! It would be like parking your Porche on a drug and booze fuelled housing estate. No thanks.
