The brilliant:
Gang Bang, I Don’t Give A, Love Spent, Falling Free, Masterpiece
I can’t rave enough about how brilliant i think Gang Bang is, i adored it on first listen and it’s quickly become my favourite Madonna song of all time. I love the simple lyrics (i’m glad they were chopped down from the original messy lyrics) and i love how her voice becomes progressively harder and more aggressive. I think the music fits the words and atmosphere perfectly. Dita looks good in her yellow Kill Bill tracksuit. I hope that Quintin hears about that M interview and contacts her about making a video! Falling Free and Masterpiece are very welcome breaks from the pounding beats of the rest of the album, i wasn’t keen on Masterpiece at first but now i’ve heard it in all its HQ glory it’s one of my favourite ballads as is Falling Free.
I Don’t Give A is my second favourite song on the album and i love Nicky’s rap. Love Spent feels like classic Madonna and unlike GGW & TUTR this is the kind of song i can only imagine M doing.
The Very Good:
Turn Up The Radio, I’m Addicted, Beautiful Killer
I wasn’t keen on TUTR at first due to its generic sound but it’s really grown on me. I think there are much better songs that could be used as singles but maybe the general public will go for it as a summer release? I’m addicted is a great dance stomper that is probably going to sound amazing live and beautiful killer is another that i hope she performs live.
The OK:
Some Girls, Superstar, Give Me All Your Luvin, Girl Gone Wild
I will never understand the first two single choices, neither of which are that strong IMO. GGW in particular for me is another Revolver and while i love the GMAYL video, after hearing the rest of the album i’m puzzled as to why this got the best video and first release? (Yea i know Superbowl, blah). Superstar is a ‘nice’ song but i wish the production had sounded better. Something about this song sounds really off to me. Like the way that revolver sounded dog rough, if it wasn’t for that it would be one of my faves. Some girls is a grower – i’m a bit undecided about this one yet.
The Bad:
I’m A Sinner, Best Friend
I’m afraid i don’t understand the love for I’m a Sinner. I think her voice sounds terrible, the music sounds too familiar and overall it sounds like a Ray of Light reject. Not keen on Best friend either, filler.
The ‘You will never see the light of day on my iPod’:
I fucked up, B-Day Song
Why Madonna why!? MIA was wasted on this shit, she deserved a much better song. And I fucked up? You sure did honey.
Overall i think this is a really strong album and wow what a relief to hear something like this after Hard Candy. I’d probably rank it number 4 amongst her albums.
Like A Prayer > Ray Of Light > Erotica > MDNA > American Life
And finally i really like the artwork! Airbrushed to motherfuckery but still it looks eye-catching. :)
This tune is from an advert on TV and it’s quite relaxing. The kinds of music i usually find relaxing is dark ambient, futuristic, some industrial, etc so this is quite a departure for me. What floats your boat?
